Superfood Chocolate Bark & A Healthy Supplies Giveaway!

Superfood chocolate bark - dark chocolate topped with almonds, goji berries, seeds, bee pollen and white chocolate flavoured with matcha and freeze dried blueberry powder

Superfood chocolate bark - dark chocolate topped with almonds, goji berries, seeds, bee pollen and white chocolate flavoured with matcha and freeze dried blueberry powder

Apart from my mincemeat bundt cake and a few biscuits and things left over from Christmas I have been doing fairly well so far this year at eating healthily (and yes I know it hasn’t been very long yet, shush you!); I’ve been making lots of soups and stews, stocked up on veg and have put all the packets of lentils at the back of the cupboard to good use. There is no denying that I have a sweet tooth though and I crave a little something sweet after most meals; usually a couple of squares of dark chocolate is enough to satisfy the craving however and has the bonus of actually being good for me. Clementine Marmalade & ThermoPop Review & Giveaway!

Clementine marmalade - a delicious homemade marmalade using clementines, great for Christmas gifts!

Clementines are really cheap in the shops at the moment so I ended up buying two and a half kilograms of them; I’ve been eating several of them a day but wanted to make something to use a few of them up. I really enjoy preserving, particularly when it is cold and dark outside; there is something comforting about the process and winter just makes me want to hole up at home and stockpile homemade foods so I chose to make marmalade with them. The wonderful smell of it simmering away on the stove will also make your house smell like an orange grove, which is enough to brighten up even the most miserable and wet of days. (more…)

Dresden Sugar Cake & Bake To Impress Review & Giveaway

Dresden sugar cake - an enriched yeast coffee cake with a crisp, buttery sugar topping

I’ve got a bit of a thing for recipe books, I don’t buy them very often but I do love them and will happily spend hours looking through them in search of inspiration; so when I was offered a copy of Bake To Impress by Christian Hümbs to review of course I accepted. Christian Hümbs is a German patissier who is a judge on the German Bake-Off, has worked at a host of Michelin starred restaurants and hotels and was awarded German Patissier of the year in 2014; Bake To Impress is his first book. Tropical Fruit Coconut Tart & A Giveaway

Tropical fruit coconut tart - crisp coconut pastry filled with coconut creme patissiere & tropical fruits

We have had some truly glorious weather recently (interspersed between some very wet and miserable days…); as I write this I am overlooking our back garden, which is beautifully warm and sunny, aaand horrifically overgrown…all the plants have had a sudden growth spurt and it is getting towards the point where even the dog can’t venture out any further than the patio due to the height of the weeds (he is only small). It needs some serious work doing to it; not just weeding, but leveling, digging out a couple of trees, extending the patio, laying a path, building vegetable beds, mending the fences etc. etc. I thought about starting work on it the other day, but I just couldn’t face it so baked this tropical fruit coconut tart instead which was a much more satisfying use of my time. Double Chocolate Almond Raisin Muffins & A Giveaway

Jumbo double chocolate almond raisin muffins

I’ve had a pretty busy couple of weeks recently, there has been some very grown-up stuff happening (words like mortgage! Solicitors! Conveyancing!), and some not-so-grown-up stuff (epic pirate cake baking!), as well as several friends coming to stay; so unfortunately I’ve had very little time for blogging and my social media has been thoroughly neglected. I thought I would ease back into things with something simple – double chocolate almond raisin muffins, because muffins are some of the easiest things you can make. (more…)

S’mores Eclairs & A Giveaway

S'mores eclairs - crisp, craquelin topped choux pastry fingers with toasted marshmallow creme patissiere, chocolate, toasted marshmallows & crushed digestive biscuit

The last few days I have achieved precisely nothing. The reason for this is three months old, loud, and prone to waking at 4am; aka my niece. I was babysitting for a couple of days and despite my best intentions to get some work done while she was here I failed miserably; if anyone can share the secret to taking care of a baby and dog whilst also working and doing the cooking and cleaning AND somehow managing to fit in some time to sleep please do share! The whole experience left me in need of something sweet, but fitting in baking and photography as well would have been a step too far! Unfortunately I made (and ate) these s’mores eclairs a couple of days before babysitting, so there were none left by the time I needed one! (more…)

Rich, Fudgy Better-For-You Brownies (Gluten/Grain/Refined Sugar/Dairy-Free) & A Giveaway

Rich, dense & fudgy better-for-you brownies made with nutritious ingredients such as coconut flour & cacao powder. Gluten, grain, refined sugar & dairy free

I honestly thought that these brownies were going to be rubbish; this was my first time baking with coconut flour and I just made the recipe up as I went along. They didn’t look like anything much when I pulled them out of the oven and they don’t have that much coveted shiny, flaky brownie crust; but when I bit into one I was totally converted, they are extremely good. So rich, fudgy and chocolatey that they are practically indistinguishable from the best regular flour/refined sugar/butter laden brownies. And yet they are free from gluten, grains, refined sugar AND dairy and are made using several highly nutritious ingredients so you can enjoy a slice without feeling too guilty. (more…)

Some Thoughts On The Subject Of ‘Artisan’ (The Craftsmen’s Dinner Campaign) & A Competition!

Ferraby-Knives-image-1

Ferraby-Knives-image-11

I have great respect for anyone who has the drive and talent to be able to forge a career as a craftsman; I know from firsthand experience that it certainly isn’t an easy path; I trained at university in jewellery and silversmithing and then tried to make a living selling my handmade silver jewellery. I failed. Sure, I could have tried harder and for longer, worked on honing my skills and maybe I could have got somewhere, but I found the whole experience quite frankly utterly disheartening and expensive and I lost any enjoyment in the craft. Traipsing around the country with your stock and display set-up to craft fairs that charge you an extortionate amount of money just to have a stall there with no guarantee of actually selling enough (or anything at all) to cover the costs was not fun, so I quit. I still make the odd piece of jewellery, for myself or as a commission but I think that I am better off just doing it as a hobby. (more…)

Spiralized Vegetable Noodle Bowls With Peanut Sauce & An OXO Spiralizer Giveaway

Healthy rainbow vegetable noodle bowls with buckwheat noodles and peanut sauce - Domestic Gothess

Happy New Year! This is my first post of 2016 so it kind of had to be a healthy one really. After the vast quantities of desserts, cheese and alcohol I consumed over the Christmas period I feel I should probably cut back a bit and try and be healthy for a little while at least… That is proving to be rather difficult while there are still piles of Christmas chocolates scattered around the house; it is probably a good idea to eat them all to get rid of the temptation… (more…)
