Vegetarian mushroom meatballs - these moist, herby, delicious meatless 'meatballs' taste amazing with tomato sauce and pasta - perfect healthy comfort food!

The weather the last couple of days has been utterly foul. Non-stop rain all day and the darkest, gloomiest skies. Comfort food is definitely in order and these vegetarian mushroom meatballs are just the thing. Spaghetti with tomato sauce, meatballs and plenty of cheese has to be one of the ultimate comfort foods and it is really easy to make an amazing tasting vegetarian (or even vegan) version of the classic. Apple cinnamon brioche bread braid - the perfect Autumn breakfast.

Apple cinnamon brioche bread braid - the perfect Autumn breakfast.

The apple tree in my garden has yielded a decent crop this year. The apples are a little too sharp to eat as they are however so I need to do lots of baking to use them up. I haven’t decided exactly what to make with them all, but I started by baking this apple cinnamon brioche which used up four of them and was very tasty too. (more…)

A fresh, fried, yeasted doughnut is a beautiful thing. Pillowy soft, sweet and so full of flavour, fried doughnuts are the pinnacle of comfort food. I do think that baked and cake doughnuts have their place, but they simply cannot beat the perfection of a fried one. (more…)

Haunted Halloween pavlova - a spooky, impressive centerpiece with meringue ghosts and bones, Oreo soil and berry coulis blood; it is easier to make than you might think!

Now that we are firmly into October I figured that I should probably start sharing some Halloween bakes. I really enjoyed making (and eating!) this Halloween haunted pavlova, also known as ‘The Haunting Of Anna Pavlova’ – props to my cousin Maddy for coming up with that one! (more…)

Do you struggle to cook healthy, tasty meals during the week? I definitely do. It is difficult to make a good meal when you are tired and pressed for time, so all too often I turn to the same old pasta and pesto as it is so quick and easy. With a little thought however, it is possible to come up with a tasty, nourishing and satisfying meal that is suitable for all the family and ready in under half an hour. (more…)

Nutty bourbon brownies – gooey, fudgy brownies with a boozy kick and plenty of crunchy nuts.

It has been a long time since I shared a brownie recipe on here; I am making up for that though with these nutty bourbon brownies as they are very, very good! I actually made the recipe a while ago but hadn’t gotten round to sharing it here, looking at the pictures again is making me think that I will have to bake another batch! (more…)

We are firmly into Autumn now, and while I can’t say that I am enjoying the sudden drop in temperature and the persistent rain, it is not all bad I suppose. Autumn does bring with it some of the best foods – pumpkins, apples, pears and plums to name a few; it is my favourite time of year for baking, and I do like drinking lots of hot drinks and wearing cosy jumpers. (Although I do have a penchant for a somewhat post-apocalyptic style which means that all of my jumpers have THE MOST impracticable sleeves…). Oh, and it is also my favourite holiday – Halloween! Easy vegan lemon curd recipe - egg and dairy free lemon curd that is sweet, creamy, intensely lemony, totally addictive and ready in under ten minutes!

I first made this lemon curd some time ago now to fill my vegan lemon curd layer cake, but I felt like it deserved it’s own recipe post. Recently Damian has been trying to cut down on dairy as it isn’t very good for his stomach (a problem that a lot of people have I think), so I have been trying to join him. Seeing as I am already vegetarian (occasionally pescatarian), this has meant that I have been making a lot more vegan recipes so expect to see more of them on here! (more…)

Plum And Poppy Seed Traybake And Wild Honey & Rye Review

A light poppy seed sponge cake with juicy fresh plums and a review of ‘Wild Honey & Rye’ by Ren Behan.

Plum and poppy seed traybake - a light vanilla poppy seed sponge filled with juicy fresh plums (dairy-free)

How much do you know about Polish food? Probably not a huge amount; it seems to be somewhat of a ‘lesser known’ cuisine and beyond pierogi I have very little knowledge of what Polish food actually involves. Ren Behan aims to change that with her new cookbook, ‘Wild Honey & Rye’, which was released today. (more…)
