We are firmly into Autumn now, and while I can’t say that I am enjoying the sudden drop in temperature and the persistent rain, it is not all bad I suppose. Autumn does bring with it some of the best foods – pumpkins, apples, pears and plums to name a few; it is my favourite time of year for baking, and I do like drinking lots of hot drinks and wearing cosy jumpers. (Although I do have a penchant for a somewhat post-apocalyptic style which means that all of my jumpers have THE MOST impracticable sleeves…). Oh, and it is also my favourite holiday – Halloween! Plum And Poppy Seed Traybake And Wild Honey & Rye Review

A light poppy seed sponge cake with juicy fresh plums and a review of ‘Wild Honey & Rye’ by Ren Behan.

Plum and poppy seed traybake - a light vanilla poppy seed sponge filled with juicy fresh plums (dairy-free)

How much do you know about Polish food? Probably not a huge amount; it seems to be somewhat of a ‘lesser known’ cuisine and beyond pierogi I have very little knowledge of what Polish food actually involves. Ren Behan aims to change that with her new cookbook, ‘Wild Honey & Rye’, which was released today. (more…)

Yellow Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Ganache Frosting

Yellow vanilla cake with chocolate ganache frosting - moist, tender yellow vanilla sheet cake with whipped chocolate ganache and M&M's.

I’m heading off to Bloodstock festival tomorrow; I go to at least one festival every year and am usually very well prepared way in advance. This year however it seems like time has gone by much quicker than usual and I am utterly unprepared, so today is going to be spent in a mad rush trying to get everything packed and sorted. I haven’t even cleaned our tent after last years camping so that is going to be a grim job! (more…)

Classic Victoria sponge cake (Victoria sandwich) - the perfect tea time treat!

After several years of complaining about my oven burning everything I put in it, resulting in much swearing, frustration and strategic placement of icing/fruit/chocolate/props to hide the burnt bits, I finally have a lovely new oven! A range cooker in fact, so I have loads of space for baking and cooking and it looks pretty sexy! (more…)

Coconut And Berry Fruit Tarts

Coconut and berry fruit tarts - crisp coconut pastry with coconut pastry cream and fresh berries.

I have been eating so many berries recently, I’ve always got a stash of them both in the fridge and in the freezer, I can’t get enough! I want to make the most of them while they are still in season as soon enough they will be gone for the Winter. Although most of them just get eaten straight from the tub, I have managed to set a few aside for baking with; these coconut and berry fruit tarts are a wonderful way to serve them and would be perfect for afternoon tea or a garden party, or just because it’s Tuesday. Chocolate berry granola - a healthy way to eat chocolate for breakfast!

We are currently renovating our kitchen so cooking and baking is pretty much impossible at the moment (though I did somehow manage to make jam in the study yesterday!). So far I have learned how to plaster and next up is woodwork and tiling! It will be at least a couple of weeks yet before we are finished but hopefully the kitchen will be usable again in about a week once we put the sink in and actually have water downstairs! I will keep you updated on our progress and fingers crossed we will have a much nicer kitchen than the ugly, outdated one that we ripped out once we are done. (more…)

Nutella Swirled Banana Yeast Bread

nutella swirled banana yeast bread - soft yeasted banana bread with a generous swirl of nutella.

We all love banana bread (well, all of us apart from Damian who for some inexplicable reason doesn’t like it. More for me I guess.), and I’m sure that we can all agree that banana bread with nutella is food of the gods. But how many of you have tried a yeasted banana bread? More specifically, one that is swirled with gooey nutella? Probably not very many. But that needs to change because this nutella swirled banana yeast bread is incredible and a totally different way of using up those over-ripe bananas. (more…)

Little cherry almond cakes - easy to make and perfect for picnics!

One of my fondest memories from my childhood is the family picnics we used to have throughout the Summer. My parents would pack us three children, two dogs and a veritable feast into the car and we would head off to a spot by the river where we could play in the water and the accompanying fields before stuffing our faces. I don’t go on very many picnics anymore now that I am an adult, which is something that I need to fix as they are one of the most enjoyable parts of Summer. (more…)

My Favourite Chocolate Layer Cake

The best chocolate layer cake - three layers of moist chocolate cake filled with smooth chocolate ganache, perfect for any celebration!

Everyone needs a go-to chocolate cake recipe, one that is guaranteed to work every time and is perfect for any celebration, this one is mine. Three layers of rich, moist, intensely chocolaty cake smothered with smooth chocolate ganache. Obviously what constitutes the ‘ultimate’ chocolate cake is fairly subjective and not everyone will agree; but I think that this one is pretty perfect.
