If you’re not familiar with the Degustabox then in brief it’s a subscription service whereby each month you’re sent a box full of goodies to try; most are either new brands or products and it works out far cheaper than buying everything individually in the shops. Orange and star anise Christmas snowflake bread (Gibassier) - Domestic GothessI can’t believe that Christmas is less than a month away already…November disappeared in the blink of an eye and now Christmas is nearly here and I don’t even know what we’re doing for it yet; I am feeling decidedly non-festive and more than a little Grinchy… So I decided to do a spot of festive baking in an attempt to make myself feel less unenthusiastic about the whole thing. I made these delicious orange and anise snowflake breads; and while I didn’t end up feeling any more festive (I think more mulled wine may be needed), they were incredibly tasty and satisfying and would be perfect as part of a Christmas breakfast or brunch. Semolina and rosemary bread made with honey and olive oilThis bread should have made it onto the blog over a month ago but I had somewhat of an error of judgement when it came to the shaping of it… I was aiming for a spiral, but what came out of the oven looked, and there is no other way of putting this, like a giant turd…It was at once hilariously funny, and incredibly frustrating as the bread tasted amazing, but there was no way I could post it, it just looked too unseemly. Obviously rye bread is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of things made with rye, and I came across a picture on Pinterest of a beautifully marbled rye bread, half light and half dark coloured; I can’t resist a beautiful bread so I knew that I had to give it a try, the result was both extremely attractive and delicious. Or at least, I’ve found a new new favourite bread. This, this is the bread to end all other breads, the kind of bread that dreams are made of…Hokkaido milk bread is quite simply the fluffiest, softest, lightest, most pillowy cloud of deliciousness I have ever eaten. It’s better than brioche…there, I said it. I’m not going to kid you, it’s not the easiest or the quickest bread to make (that’s not to say it’s difficult), but boy is it worth the effort; in fact, I thoroughly recommend that you double the recipe and make two loaves in one go, it’s not really that much extra work and you Will. Yafawi Sfeeha – Palestinian Cheese Buns

The July Daring Bakers’ Challenge was brought to us by Manal from Manal’s Bites. She introduced us to an authentic Palestinian dish from Jaffa that is served as a main meal along with a bowl of soup or a salad. The “Yafawi Sfeeha” or also known as “Milwayeh” which means twisted, is crispy yet tender and full of flavor.

Muesli Bread

Muesli bread, the perfect healthy, filling breakfast - Domestic GothessI think I may have found a new favourite bread; this muesli bread is hearty, satisfying, delicious and it’s healthy! It is also a great way to use up some of that half eaten packet of muesli forgotten about at the back of the cupboard for 6+ months… (just me?). It stays soft for a good few days in a airtight container and makes fantastic toast; I’ve been enjoying it for breakfast slathered with butter and jam. The flavour is slightly sweet from the dried fruit and a little maple syrup and there’s a hint of warm cinnamon. Because it is full of oats, fruit and nuts it is very filling, so it makes a great breakfast or snack. (more…)

Vegetarian red lentil koftas with flatbreads & harissa youghurt sauce - Domestic GothessNow that the weather has warmed up a little and the evenings are lighter I have been craving summery food and meals outside, problem being that my garden is an absolute state…completely overgrown and chock full of weeds. Even my poor dog struggles to get to the bottom of the garden; it is going to take some serious, backbreaking work to get it into any kind of fit state for enjoying a meal in (and I don’t even have any outdoor furniture…). If I did have a nice garden to eat in though, these vegetarian red lentil koftas with flatbreads and harissa yoghurt are exactly the kind of thing I would make. They are the perfect summer sharing food, just lay everything out on the table and let people pile up their own flatbreads. (more…)
