Beer Pretzel Hot Dog Buns

Beer pretzel hot dog buns

We attended our first barbecue of the year at the weekend. The weather was glorious, the company couldn’t have been better and the food was plentiful (though not as plentiful as the alcohol…); all in all it was a lovely day and one that I hope to repeat many times over the summer. But I have never actually hosted my own barbecue; we spent many years living in a flat, making barbecues impossible, and although we now have a house, the garden is very narrow, the patio tiny and the whole garden is in quite a state; it needs some serious work doing to it before we can even fit a barbecue out there, let alone more than two people. We intend to sort it out this summer, and when (if) we do, I’ll finally get round to hosting one and will probably vastly over-cater because I can’t have people round without providing waay too much food – can’t risk anyone going hungry! Hokkaido Milk Bread Hot Cross Bun Loaf

Hokkaido milk bread hot cross bun loaf, perfect for Easter - Domestic Gothess

The best part about any holiday or celebration is the food, and more specifically, the baked goods; cakes and breads feels so much more special if you only consume them once a year. My favorite Easter bake is hot cross buns, though I do also love Simnel cake, but I have a particularly weak spot for sweet enriched breads. I generally bake at least one batch of hot cross buns around Easter time every year; I decided to do something a little different this year though and baked a hot cross bun loaf using my hokkaido milk bread recipe as the base. Carrot & Caraway Seed Bread & February 2016 Degustabox Review

Carrot and caraway seed bread loaf, perfect for sandwiches

Welcome to my review of the February 2016 Degustabox. If you’re not familiar with the Degustabox then in brief it’s a subscription service whereby each month you’re sent a box full of goodies to try; most are either new brands or products and it works out far cheaper than buying everything individually in the shops. It is a bit of a lottery however as you have no idea what you will be sent, some products you may love, and others you might not be so keen on; the surprise element is quite fun though, and it encourages you to try products that you wouldn’t normally think to buy. If you fancy giving a box a try yourself then simply enter the discount code BLDEG15 at the checkout and you’ll get £6 off your first order! (more…)

Orange & Anise Snowflake Bread

Orange and star anise Christmas snowflake bread (Gibassier) - Domestic GothessI can’t believe that Christmas is less than a month away already…November disappeared in the blink of an eye and now Christmas is nearly here and I don’t even know what we’re doing for it yet; I am feeling decidedly non-festive and more than a little Grinchy… So I decided to do a spot of festive baking in an attempt to make myself feel less unenthusiastic about the whole thing. I made these delicious orange and anise snowflake breads; and while I didn’t end up feeling any more festive (I think more mulled wine may be needed), they were incredibly tasty and satisfying and would be perfect as part of a Christmas breakfast or brunch. Gingerbread Spiced Apple Doughnuts

Gingerbread spiced apple doughnuts - Domestic GothessI have been craving doughnuts for several months now, but held off making them until there was an occasion where there would be enough people to eat them all; the problem with doughnuts is that they really are best eaten on the day they are made after which they start to go a bit dry. So when some friends finally hosted a party I took the opportunity to make some to take along. (more…)

Semolina And Rosemary Bread

Semolina and rosemary bread made with honey and olive oilThis bread should have made it onto the blog over a month ago but I had somewhat of an error of judgement when it came to the shaping of it… I was aiming for a spiral, but what came out of the oven looked, and there is no other way of putting this, like a giant turd…It was at once hilariously funny, and incredibly frustrating as the bread tasted amazing, but there was no way I could post it, it just looked too unseemly. I resolved to bake it again, with a little more thought to the shaping of the loaf…. (more…)

Garlic Mushroom & Manchego Baked Egg Bread Boats

Garlic mushroom & manchego cheese baked egg bread boats Something a little different from me today; I have mentioned before on the blog that I am a boring breakfaster and generally just eat cereal or porridge; occasionally I make an effort to have something a bit more interesting, though what usually happens is that I will have my cereal for breakfast then have a second breakfast for lunch…This is mainly because I tend to wake up hungry and just want to EAT, I don’t want to have to cook first… (more…)

Marbled Rye Bread

Marbled rye bread recipe - Domestic Gothess I have managed to end up with five bags of rye flour to get through so expect to see quite a few recipes with rye in coming up! Obviously rye bread is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of things made with rye, and I came across a picture on Pinterest of a beautifully marbled rye bread, half light and half dark coloured; I can’t resist a beautiful bread so I knew that I had to give it a try, the result was both extremely attractive and delicious. Hokkaido Milk Bread

Hokkaido milk bread, the softest, fluffiest bread you will ever eat - Domestic GothessYou know how I said in my last bread post that I’d found a new favourite bread? I was wrong. Or at least, I’ve found a new new favourite bread. This, this is the bread to end all other breads, the kind of bread that dreams are made of…Hokkaido milk bread is quite simply the fluffiest, softest, lightest, most pillowy cloud of deliciousness I have ever eaten. It’s better than brioche…there, I said it. I’m not going to kid you, it’s not the easiest or the quickest bread to make (that’s not to say it’s difficult), but boy is it worth the effort; in fact, I thoroughly recommend that you double the recipe and make two loaves in one go, it’s not really that much extra work and you Will. Not. Regret. It. (more…)

Yafawi Sfeeha – Palestinian Cheese Buns

The July Daring Bakers’ Challenge was brought to us by Manal from Manal’s Bites. She introduced us to an authentic Palestinian dish from Jaffa that is served as a main meal along with a bowl of soup or a salad. The “Yafawi Sfeeha” or also known as “Milwayeh” which means twisted, is crispy yet tender and full of flavor.

Yafawi sfeeha - Palestinian halloumi cheese buns - Domestic GothessI have had a truly terrible week, and am in somewhat of a foul mood at the moment, so I apologise if I don’t really feel like talking about food today and this post gets a bit ranty… Skip straight to the recipe if you like! We were supposed to be going on holiday today to Wacken festival in Germany, everything was booked and paid for (and non-refundable…); but we are unable to go because the British passport office are the biggest bunch of unhelpful incompetents I have ever encountered.
