Gin And Bitter Lemon Sorbet

Gin and bitter lemon sorbet - a light, refreshing grown-up treat

My fiance is a bit of a sorbet fiend, he would eat it almost every day if he could; but I think he got through this batch more quickly than any other sorbet I have ever made before…it must be the gin… And to be fair, this gin and bitter lemon sorbet is pretty much everything you could ever want from a sorbet – light, refreshing, not too sweet and a little bit boozy… (more…)

Damson And Gin Sorbet

Damson and gin sorbet - Domestic Gothess I am lucky enough that both my parents and in-laws grow quite a lot of their own fruit and vegetables so in exchange for the odd pot of jam or bag of apples and pears from our own garden we often receive a carrier bag full of whatever has been newly harvested. Most recently it has been potatoes, pears, runner beans and damsons; the latter I deliberated for a while as to what I wanted to do with them, it was going to be either jam, gin or sorbet. In the end seeing as I had just made a big batch of blackberry jam I opted to combine the other two options and make damson and gin sorbet. (more…)

Fresh Ginger & Honey Ice Cream

Fresh ginger and honey ice cream - Domestic GothessI don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but in the UK it has been HOT (relatively…I know that some of you will sneer at our paltry 30 degrees, but we don’t do heat well in the UK, and being a goth I melt when exposed to bright sunlight…); I made the mistake of attempting to do a kettlebell workout yesterday…and I have never sweat so much in all my life…the floor around me was actually wet (pleasant I know). So obviously I have wanted to live off of nothing but ice cream. (more…)

Lime Ice Cream

lime ice creamI had a load of limes left over from making mini lime yoghurt loaf cakes – I had needed lots of the zest but not the juice; so seeing as the weather has been quite warm and sunny recently I decided to put them to good use in some ice cream. I’ve also been given a new (secondhand, slightly battered…) ice cream maker – one of the ones where you don’t need to pre-freeze the bowl, so now I can have ice cream on a whim, without having to remember to put the bowl in the freezer the day beforehand! Roasted Strawberry Ice Cream

roasted strawberry ice cream

Yes, I know it is completely the wrong time of year to be posting an ice cream recipe, especially a strawberry one, but this one is made with frozen strawberries so you don’t need to wait for strawberries to be in season to make it (you can still use fresh ones as well though). I was having a bit of a freezer clearout and had nearly two kilos of strawberries in there that had been there god knows how long and really needed to be used up. I was unsure as to what to do with them – I made a couple of smoothies but I wanted to try and use them up quickly and I would have had to live off smoothies to achieve that! I had already made several batches of jam so didn’t really want any more so I was left with ice cream, but I had made some ice cream with the same strawberries previously and had been disappointed with the flavour – they were just a bit watery and tasteless and the ice cream was icy because I had had to add so much strawberry puree to it to get any flavour (the reason they had been abandoned in the freezer in the first place). Maple Ice Cream With Maple Caramel Swirl

male syrup ice cream

Who says ice cream is just for summer? To me, maple syrup is very much a warm, caramel-like autumn/winter flavour and this creamy maple ice cream with maple caramel swirl is one of my favourite ice cream flavours. Plus it makes an amazing replacement for vanilla ice cream with hot desserts such as apple pie or crumble and is perfect with pancakes or waffles for breakfast, maybe drizzled with a little extra maple caramel… (more…)

Nutmeg Ice Cream

nutmeg ice cream

It’s never the wrong time of year for ice cream. I enjoy making it all year round but I vary the flavours depending on the season, spring and summer are all about fresh fruits and refreshing flavours whereas in autumn and winter I mostly make ice creams spiked with spices and booze.  This nutmeg ice cream is perfect for autumn and winter; nutmeg to me is the quintessential flavour of the season and this delicious ice cream makes a great replacement for vanilla to serve with fruit pies, crumbles, tarts and cobblers. Blackberry Crumble Ice Cream

Blackberry Crumble Ice Cream

Blackberry recipe number two! I had been planning on making a batch of plum crumble ice cream whilst they were in season, but seeing as I ended up picking so many blackberries I decided to do a blackberry crumble one instead. The ice cream is an attractive pale violet colour and has a delicate blackberry flavour which melds beautifully with the chunks of crunchy crumble. If you wanted to really amp up the purple colour you could always add a couple of drops of food colouring. (more…)
