What is the first food that come to mind when you think of brunch? There are so many delicious options but for me, it’s got to be waffles. They are a little bit too much effort to make for breakfast (or maybe that’s just me, I am not a morning person and I struggle with anything that is more effort than pouring some cereal into a bowl…), but for brunch they are just perfect and would be my first choice every time. Welcome to my review of the January 2016 Degustabox. If you’re not familiar with the Degustabox then in brief it’s a subscription service whereby each month you’re sent a box full of goodies to try; most are either new brands or products and it works out far cheaper than buying everything individually in the shops. It is a bit of a lottery however as you have no idea what you will be sent, some products you may love, and others you might not be so keen on; the surprise element is quite fun though, and it encourages you to try products that you wouldn’t normally think to buy. If you fancy giving a box a try yourself then simply enter the discount code BLDEG15 at the checkout and you’ll get £6 off your first order! (more…)
Christmas is only a few days away now and I’m still not feeling festive…this is due in part to the fact that we don’t have a Christmas tree or any decorations up this year; we are in the process of renovating our house so it’s in a bit of a state and there was nowhere to put the tree. I intend to make up for it next year when the house is finished by going overboard with the decorations… I’m sure I will be in the Christmas spirit come Christmas day, which we are spending with a group of friends, and then Boxing Day will be spent with family. I am on dessert duty for both occasions (what a surprise!) and am planning on making chilled desserts that I can prepare the day beforehand as I wont be in my kitchen to bake anything on the day. So I wont be making this apple and mincemeat filo wreath as it needs to be eaten fresh from the oven (although I am partial to a slice of it cold, the following morning for breakfast). (more…)
It is no secret that I love tea; I drink about seven cups of tea a day but barely notice most of them as I am so busy doing something else at the same time; but sometimes it is good to stop for a moment, take a step back from whatever it is that you are so incredibly busy with and breathe. Take ten minutes for yourself to relax, regroup, savour the tea and come back to whatever you were working on refreshed and focused. (more…)
I have been craving doughnuts for several months now, but held off making them until there was an occasion where there would be enough people to eat them all; the problem with doughnuts is that they really are best eaten on the day they are made after which they start to go a bit dry. So when some friends finally hosted a party I took the opportunity to make some to take along. (more…)
I don’t think that I have ever been to a bonfire night celebration as an adult, though the holiday is tinged with nostalgia; as a child I remember being bundled up warm and heading out as a family to watch the local firework display and burning of the guy; or building a bonfire in the back garden (check for hedgehogs!) and fashioning a guy from old clothes and newspaper and then gleefully setting fire to it… There are certain foods that are always reminiscent of Guy Fawkes night as well; crisp, cheesy jacket potatoes, mulled apple juice (though I prefer the grown-up kind now!), squidgy gingerbread, toffee apples, and marshmallows toasted on the bonfire; I used to let mine catch fire so that they were burnt on the outside and liquid on the inside… (more…)
I lost all form of self-restraint when I baked this ( not that I had much to start with). I was incapable of going into the kitchen without gobbling down a slice it was so incredibly moreish. I got through nearly half of the loaf by myself in a day, and it is not a small loaf… I justified this gluttony by telling myself that the apples counteract the butter…right?! (more…)
