The weather has been pretty grim recently – wet and cold and miserable. As such, I’ve been drinking rather a lot of hot chocolate in the evenings. These chocolate dipped Lebkuchen are really easy to make, keep well and embody all the flavours of Christmas. Lebkuchen are a traditional German festive biscuit, similar to gingerbread but are softer and more cakey. They are made with honey, ground almonds and lots of spices and are topped with a sweet glaze as well as often being dipped in chocolate. (more…)

Are you prepared for Christmas yet? Most years I’m super organised and have all my gift shopping finished by now, but this year I haven’t bought a single thing yet and don’t even know what to get anyone. I have been craving doughnuts for several months now, but held off making them until there was an occasion where there would be enough people to eat them all; the problem with doughnuts is that they really are best eaten on the day they are made after which they start to go a bit dry. I don’t think that I have ever been to a bonfire night celebration as an adult, though the holiday is tinged with nostalgia; as a child I remember being bundled up warm and heading out as a family to watch the local firework display and burning of the guy; or building a bonfire in the back garden (check for hedgehogs!) and fashioning a guy from old clothes and newspaper and then gleefully setting fire to it… There are certain foods that are always reminiscent of Guy Fawkes night as well; crisp, cheesy jacket potatoes, mulled apple juice (though I prefer the grown-up kind now!), squidgy gingerbread, toffee apples, and marshmallows toasted on the bonfire; I used to let mine catch fire so that they were burnt on the outside and liquid on the inside… (more…)
