Dresden Sugar Cake & Bake To Impress Review & Giveaway

Dresden sugar cake - an enriched yeast coffee cake with a crisp, buttery sugar topping

I’ve got a bit of a thing for recipe books, I don’t buy them very often but I do love them and will happily spend hours looking through them in search of inspiration; so when I was offered a copy of Bake To Impress by Christian Hümbs to review of course I accepted. Christian Hümbs is a German patissier who is a judge on the German Bake-Off, has worked at a host of Michelin starred restaurants and hotels and was awarded German Patissier of the year in 2014; Bake To Impress is his first book. Double Chocolate Almond Raisin Muffins & A Giveaway

Jumbo double chocolate almond raisin muffins

I’ve had a pretty busy couple of weeks recently, there has been some very grown-up stuff happening (words like mortgage! Solicitors! Conveyancing!), and some not-so-grown-up stuff (epic pirate cake baking!), as well as several friends coming to stay; so unfortunately I’ve had very little time for blogging and my social media has been thoroughly neglected. I thought I would ease back into things with something simple – double chocolate almond raisin muffins, because muffins are some of the easiest things you can make. (more…)

S’mores Eclairs & A Giveaway

S'mores eclairs - crisp, craquelin topped choux pastry fingers with toasted marshmallow creme patissiere, chocolate, toasted marshmallows & crushed digestive biscuit

The last few days I have achieved precisely nothing. The reason for this is three months old, loud, and prone to waking at 4am; aka my niece. I was babysitting for a couple of days and despite my best intentions to get some work done while she was here I failed miserably; if anyone can share the secret to taking care of a baby and dog whilst also working and doing the cooking and cleaning AND somehow managing to fit in some time to sleep please do share! The whole experience left me in need of something sweet, but fitting in baking and photography as well would have been a step too far! Unfortunately I made (and ate) these s’mores eclairs a couple of days before babysitting, so there were none left by the time I needed one! (more…)

Rich, Fudgy Better-For-You Brownies (Gluten/Grain/Refined Sugar/Dairy-Free) & A Giveaway

Rich, dense & fudgy better-for-you brownies made with nutritious ingredients such as coconut flour & cacao powder. Gluten, grain, refined sugar & dairy free

I honestly thought that these brownies were going to be rubbish; this was my first time baking with coconut flour and I just made the recipe up as I went along. They didn’t look like anything much when I pulled them out of the oven and they don’t have that much coveted shiny, flaky brownie crust; but when I bit into one I was totally converted, they are extremely good. So rich, fudgy and chocolatey that they are practically indistinguishable from the best regular flour/refined sugar/butter laden brownies. And yet they are free from gluten, grains, refined sugar AND dairy and are made using several highly nutritious ingredients so you can enjoy a slice without feeling too guilty. (more…)

Some Thoughts On The Subject Of ‘Artisan’ (The Craftsmen’s Dinner Campaign) & A Competition!

Ferraby-Knives-image-11

I have great respect for anyone who has the drive and talent to be able to forge a career as a craftsman; I know from firsthand experience that it certainly isn’t an easy path; I trained at university in jewellery and silversmithing and then tried to make a living selling my handmade silver jewellery. I failed. Sure, I could have tried harder and for longer, worked on honing my skills and maybe I could have got somewhere, but I found the whole experience quite frankly utterly disheartening and expensive and I lost any enjoyment in the craft. Traipsing around the country with your stock and display set-up to craft fairs that charge you an extortionate amount of money just to have a stall there with no guarantee of actually selling enough (or anything at all) to cover the costs was not fun, so I quit. I still make the odd piece of jewellery, for myself or as a commission but I think that I am better off just doing it as a hobby. (more…)

Apple, Fig, Pecan & Honey Scones & A JING Tea Giveaway

Apple, fig, pecan and honey scones with a hint of spice - Domestic GothessIt is no secret that I love tea; I drink about seven cups of tea a day but barely notice most of them as I am so busy doing something else at the same time; but sometimes it is good to stop for a moment, take a step back from whatever it is that you are so incredibly busy with and breathe. Take ten minutes for yourself to relax, regroup, savour the tea and come back to whatever you were working on refreshed and focused. (more…)

Bake In Black Review & Giveaway & Chocolate Raspberry Battenberg

Chocolate and raspberry battenberg and Bake In Black ReviewWhen I was given the opportunity to review Bake In Black, the new music inspired cookbook by Eve O’Sullivan, the well-known food writer, and David O’ Sullivan, I jumped at the chance; I had heard quite a lot about the book already (it was reviewed in Metal Hammer after all) and I was intrigued. The premise of the book is to take the title of a song or album from the world of rock and heavy metal and bake something inspired by it, resulting in recipes such as “God Save The Cream” angel cake (Sex Pistols), “Sweet Tooth O’ Mine” honey, molasses and maple cake (Guns N’ Roses), “Them Buns” white chocolate, apricot and orange swirl buns (Alice In Chains) and “Killer Queen Of Puddings” (Queen). There are a lot of recipes packed into Bake In Black, all of them delicious looking; the photos are all inspired by the band the bake is based on, making the book visually interesting as well as humorous.
