Haunted Halloween pavlova - a spooky, impressive centerpiece with meringue ghosts and bones, Oreo soil and berry coulis blood; it is easier to make than you might think!

Now that we are firmly into October I figured that I should probably start sharing some Halloween bakes. I really enjoyed making (and eating!) this Halloween haunted pavlova, also known as ‘The Haunting Of Anna Pavlova’ – props to my cousin Maddy for coming up with that one! (more…)

Mini Bleeding Heart Halloween Cakes

Mini red velvet layer cakes with ermine frosting topped with a bleeding heart and ganache 'blood'; perfect for Halloween

I haven’t had as much fun in the kitchen in a long time as I had making these mini bleeding heart Halloween cakes; yes I am still trying to clean the food colouring off my hands and worktops but it was a fun and almost therapeutic craft project. The hearts are the brainchild of Lily Vanilli, an incredibly talented baker and author who originally designed the hearts as an anti-valentines cake. I thought they would be great for Halloween and would look even more impressive placed on top of mini red velvet layer cakes with a cascade of ganache ‘blood’ down the side. (more…)

Meringue Bone Palace Halloween Cake

meringue bone palace halloween cake - moist chocolate cake filled with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream and raspberry jam covered in meringue bones with berry coulis blood on the side

So now it’s October (how already?!) I think it’s acceptable to start posting Halloween things. I love coming up with Halloweeny bakes, it’s a chance to let my gothic creativity run wild and I have so many ideas that there’s no way I’ll be able to make them all. I actually made this cake a couple of weeks ago but have been waiting till October to post it; I wasn’t quite sure what to call it – meringue bone garden? Pile? Graveyard? In the end I went with palace but any of the former would fit. Basically it’s a chocolate cake filled with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream and raspberry jam, covered in meringue bones with berry coulis ‘blood’ on the side. (more…)

Cranberry Pumpkin Loaf Cake

cranberry pumpkin bread

I’ve been a bit late to the pumpkin party this year, although I cook with butternut squash a lot (it’s my favourite vegetable), I don’t often bake with it, but I decided to remedy that this week with a loaf of pumpkin bread (I say bread but I would call this a loaf cake…) and now I’m kicking myself for not getting in the game sooner because this cake is delicious…Seriously, seriously good! Mint Choc Chip Chocolate Zebra Cake

mint choc chip chocolate zebra cake

Sometimes I get the urge to bake something utterly over the top, this time, I wanted to make something GREEN…The cake stash was getting low so I knew that it had to be some form of cake…What’s green…? Mint. What goes with mint…? CHOCOLATE! So….mint choc chip chocolate zebra cake was born. The cake itself is an impressive looking hidden design of alternating layers of chocolate and peppermint sponge, covered in mint choc chip buttercream and topped with chocolate ganache and peppermint chocolate bark. Minty chocolate heaven. (more…)

Halloween is the perfect time to have some fun with baking and these gingerdead men are certainly fun. Halloween Two-Tone Rose Red Velvet Cupcakes

rose red velvet cupcakes

I like Halloween (being a gothess I suppose that’s a given!), but i prefer the more elegant side as opposed to the gory one – deep colours, vampires, witches etc. I wanted to bake something that was Halloweeny, but also attractive, so I went for red velvet cupcakes decorated with red and black two-tone roses; both roses and the colours red and black are very prevalent in gothic imagery.  I’d been itching to try this two-tone piping effect for a while now and thought that it would work perfectly with these cupcakes (my piping technique really needs some work though…).
