Monochrome cake – a stylish black and white stripy chocolate and vanilla cake which is perfect for a classy Halloween party.
I’ve had the idea for this cake in mind since last year and have been collecting black and white sweets for it for months so I figured i should probably get round to turning my ideas into reality. The reality did not disappoint, the cake turned out exactly as I had imagined and I’m sure you’ll agree that it is quite the looker! (more…)
After several years of complaining about my oven burning everything I put in it, resulting in much swearing, frustration and strategic placement of icing/fruit/chocolate/props to hide the burnt bits, I finally have a lovely new oven! A range cooker in fact, so I have loads of space for baking and cooking and it looks pretty sexy! (more…)
Everyone needs a go-to chocolate cake recipe, one that is guaranteed to work every time and is perfect for any celebration, this one is mine. Three layers of rich, moist, intensely chocolaty cake smothered with smooth chocolate ganache. Obviously what constitutes the ‘ultimate’ chocolate cake is fairly subjective and not everyone will agree; but I think that this one is pretty perfect.
It had been a while since I last made a layer cake, there certainly hasn’t been any shortage of cakes, but they have mostly just been simple, one layer ones or bundt cakes, so I thought it was high time I made something a bit more spectacular. Enter this chocolate coffee cardamom layer cake. (more…)
So now it’s October (how already?!) I think it’s acceptable to start posting Halloween things. I love coming up with Halloweeny bakes, it’s a chance to let my gothic creativity run wild and I have so many ideas that there’s no way I’ll be able to make them all. I actually made this cake a couple of weeks ago but have been waiting till October to post it; I wasn’t quite sure what to call it – meringue bone garden? Pile? Graveyard? In the end I went with palace but any of the former would fit. Basically it’s a chocolate cake filled with vanilla swiss meringue buttercream and raspberry jam, covered in meringue bones with berry coulis ‘blood’ on the side. (more…)
Not gonna lie, I chose the ingredients for this cake based on the fact that I liked the alliteration of ‘blueberry banana buckwheat’; so it’s a good job that they turned out to be delicious together! I’d had a bag of buckwheat flour sat in the cupboard for a while that I had been meaning to bake with, and a couple of over-ripe bananas in the fruit bowl just begging to be made into cake. The resulting banana buckwheat cake was delicious as is, but I couldn’t resist fancying it up a bit with the addition of vanilla mascarpone cream, jam and fruit. As mentioned above, I chose blueberries purely for the alliteration, and they worked perfectly, but strawberries, raspberries or a combination of the three would all also work just as well. (more…)
It’s been a while since I last made a layer cake, I didn’t even make one for my birthday (I had ice cream instead), the reason for this is that they are so big and there is mostly just the two of us to eat it. Therefore I will take advantage of any occasion where there is a gathering of people large enough to make one; a couple of weeks ago there was just such an occasion – a barbecue for a friends birthday so of course I made a cake. A marvelous thing happened the other day – I was able to go outside without a coat! Since then there have been a few days where it has been warm enough to venture out without one (though certainly not every day!), the sun has been making a regular, much welcomed appearance, and last night it was still just about light at 8pm. All of this has left me in quite a cheery mood and very much ready for summer, and what better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than with a suitably cheerful cake? This berry cider cake is exactly that; although it may be a little early for berries I just couldn’t resist buying some, more for their beautiful, bright colour than anything else! (more…)
We are fully into December now and I can’t quite believe just how quickly this year has vanished. Despite being initially resistant to the idea that it is nearly Christmas (see this post!), I have begun to accept it, and even to look forward to it (mulled wine may have played a part…); I still haven’t had my first mince pie though, although I have been craving one (or three (or five)). (more…)
It does occur to me that seeing as my blog name is the Domestic Gothess there is a serious lack of gothic bakes…this cake is here to rectify that oversight. I went all out with the food colouring for this one so make sure that you have a couple of pots of each colour, one probably won’t be enough! (more…)
