Pancakes (crepes) with caramel oranges and almond ice cream - an indulgent dessert or brunch!

Pancakes (crepes) with caramel oranges and almond ice cream - an indulgent dessert or brunch!

It’s nearly the second best day of the year (after Christmas) – pancake day! I love pancakes in all forms and make them regularly, for breakfast, dessert, dinner (savory or sweet ones!) or a snack; they are infinitely adaptable, easy to make and one of my favourite foods. I realised that I hadn’t really posted any dessert pancakes on the blog, just breakfasty ones; so I am remedying that with these indulgent pancakes with caramel oranges and almond ice cream. (more…)

Marmalade And Ginger Cake

Marmalade and ginger cake - soft, moist cake made with marmalade and fresh ginger

I was craving cake so badly at the weekend that I just had to give in and bake one, there was no point resisting! Besides, I spent a good portion of my weekend re-organising the kitchen (no small task!) so I think that cake was well deserved. To make a bit of space in the cupboard I decided to use up one of my jars of clementine marmalade and make a marmalade and ginger cake. This is a beautifully soft and moist cake with a lovely orange flavour and a hint of warm ginger.

Pimm’s Fruit Tarts

Did you know that the Queen has not one but two birthdays? Obviously there is her actual birthday, on April 21st; but since 1748 the sovereign of the UK has had an ‘official’ birthday which is generally set around the start of June, to coincide with a higher probability of good weather for outdoor ceremonies. For her 90th birthday this year, June 11th is the official date, but celebrations will begin on June 10th as well as there being events on May 12-15th. (more…)

Hokkaido Milk Bread Hot Cross Bun Loaf

Hokkaido milk bread hot cross bun loaf, perfect for Easter - Domestic Gothess

The best part about any holiday or celebration is the food, and more specifically, the baked goods; cakes and breads feels so much more special if you only consume them once a year. My favorite Easter bake is hot cross buns, though I do also love Simnel cake, but I have a particularly weak spot for sweet enriched breads. I generally bake at least one batch of hot cross buns around Easter time every year; I decided to do something a little different this year though and baked a hot cross bun loaf using my hokkaido milk bread recipe as the base. Orange & Anise Snowflake Bread

Orange and star anise Christmas snowflake bread (Gibassier) - Domestic GothessI can’t believe that Christmas is less than a month away already…November disappeared in the blink of an eye and now Christmas is nearly here and I don’t even know what we’re doing for it yet; I am feeling decidedly non-festive and more than a little Grinchy… So I decided to do a spot of festive baking in an attempt to make myself feel less unenthusiastic about the whole thing. I made these delicious orange and anise snowflake breads; and while I didn’t end up feeling any more festive (I think more mulled wine may be needed), they were incredibly tasty and satisfying and would be perfect as part of a Christmas breakfast or brunch. Chocolate Dipped Lime Viennese Finger Biscuits

Chocolate dipped lime viennese finger biscuitsViennese biscuits have to be one of my absolute favourites, they are incredibly delicate and buttery, with an extremely short texture which just melts in the mouth; and dipping them in chocolate just takes them to another level of deliciousness. They can be piped into pretty shapes, and on top of all that they are super quick and easy to make. (more…)

Orange And Almond Swiss Roll

orange almond swiss rollAs promised – not another bread recipe. This one made me angry though…not the actual cake, that was delicious. But I had it all planned out exactly what I wanted to make, and I wanted to make it with blood oranges, not just normal oranges. So I scoured every local shop looking for them…and couldn’t find any for sale anywhere…needless to say I was a tad disappointed…So I made it with orange oranges instead, and as I said, it was delicious, just not quite what I had planned. Orange Cornmeal Biscuits

A frequent response I get from Damian when I ask him if there is anything he would like me to bake is “something crispy”. That’s it, no more detail, he’s awkward like that…and a bit texture obsessed. He loves crispy textured things and hates things with the texture of cheesecake…which is rather annoying and why I never really make cheesecake as I’d end up eating the entire thing by myself…and as amazing as that sounds it’s probably not the best idea…(Pretty much the only time I make cheesecakes is when visiting my sister…she’s very much pro cheesecake). Stollen Plait

stollen plait

Baking stollen is one of the very few Christmas traditions that I have and I make it in some form or another every year. I don’t think I have ever baked the exact same recipe twice, I like to play around with it and try new recipes, I have tried many variations ranging from a very traditional German recipe to cinnamon roll style stollen buns. The one constant is that it must contain marzipan; I LOVE marzipan and will happily eat chunks of it out of the packet as I bake, although I try to control myself so that I have enough left for whatever it is that I am baking… (more…)

Mini Panettone With Cranberry And Ginger

I spent the day yesterday moving domesticgothess.com from wordpress.com to self hosted wordpress.org. I say I moved it…but really I spent the day watching over his shoulder as my fiance did it for me and asking stupid questions…It took a while, there were a few confusing moments and the site had a bit of downtime but we (he) got there eventually. I wanted to move to self hosted so I could use plugins and customise the site a little more so I will be having a play around and making a few changes over the coming weeks. (more…)
