More bloomin’ pancakes! I promise that once pancake day is over I will share something that isn’t pancakes, but for now I can’t get enough of them! These ones are baklava inspired – the sweet, syrupy, nutty filo pastry treat in pancake form. These are thick, soft, fluffy American-style pancakes made with Greek yogurt to keep them extra moist and pack in some protein and they are flavoured with cardamom, cinnamon and chopped nuts with a delicious sweet syrup with hints of lemon, orange blossom water and rose. Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and I’ve got a last-minute post for you in the form of Persian love cake. The story behind this cake goes that there was a Persian woman who was madly in love with a prince so she baked him a cake to make him fall in love with her; because what better way is there to win someone over than with cake?! There are multiple versions of the story floating around, some ending happily, some definitely not. It is extremely unlikely to actually be true and is most likely a fairly modern invention; but I do like food with a story!
I have been away from the blog for a little while – visiting my parents and cat-sitting in London; and have struggled to find the time (and motivation – the weather has been so warm I have just wanted to be outside) to do any blogging, so apologies to those of you who have commented and I haven’t yet replied to, service shall resume as normal as of now! I like Halloween (being a gothess I suppose that’s a given!), but i prefer the more elegant side as opposed to the gory one – deep colours, vampires, witches etc. I wanted to bake something that was Halloweeny, but also attractive, so I went for red velvet cupcakes decorated with red and black two-tone roses; both roses and the colours red and black are very prevalent in gothic imagery. I’d been itching to try this two-tone piping effect for a while now and thought that it would work perfectly with these cupcakes (my piping technique really needs some work though…). (more…)
