Monochrome cake – a stylish black and white stripy chocolate and vanilla cake which is perfect for a classy Halloween party.
I’ve had the idea for this cake in mind since last year and have been collecting black and white sweets for it for months so I figured i should probably get round to turning my ideas into reality. The reality did not disappoint, the cake turned out exactly as I had imagined and I’m sure you’ll agree that it is quite the looker! (more…)
Spring is beginning to feel a little bit more like a reality; don’t get me wrong, it is still cold and wet out, but the sun has been making a more regular appearance, it no longer gets dark quite so depressingly early and the first of the daffodils have begun to flower. It is also only a month till Easter and I have already begun planning my Easter bakes and am craving hot cross buns and Simnel cake. To celebrate the change in the seasons I did what I always do when there is cause to rejoice – I baked a cake. (more…)
I think this may be one of the prettiest cakes i have ever made…it is certainly a good deal more attractive than my last post! It is the perfect cake for spring, delicately flavoured with fragrant elderflower and sweet strawberries. I love elderflower, I remember when I was little helping my parents pick elderflowers to make wine; we had an elderflower tree in our garden and the scent was glorious; unfortunately now, living in inner Birmingham, elderflower trees are rather more difficult to find, and despite much searching while out dog walking I haven’t come across any. As promised – not another bread recipe. This one made me angry though…not the actual cake, that was delicious. But I had it all planned out exactly what I wanted to make, and I wanted to make it with blood oranges, not just normal oranges. So I scoured every local shop looking for them…and couldn’t find any for sale anywhere…needless to say I was a tad disappointed…So I made it with orange oranges instead, and as I said, it was delicious, just not quite what I had planned. This cake turned out beautifully but boy did it give me some hassle! Firstly, the cakes were meant to take 35 minutes to bake but ended up taking nearly an hour…then I had MAJOR swiss meringue buttercream issues – it curdled, which is normal, but even after over half an hour of whisking (which makes my lack of stand mixer all the more annoying) it was still curdled…I saved it in the end by microwaving a small bowl of the mixture for 10 seconds then pouring it back in to the rest of the mix while whisking, a couple more minutes of whisking later it came together into silky smooth buttercream, phew! (this is a very handy tip). Finally, once it was all assembled and looked fantastic, with its luscious drizzle of salted caramel, when I came to photograph it, it was the most grey, miserable, dark day imaginable, so even right next to the window in the early afternoon there was no light. So unfortunately I didn’t manage to take any photos that do this impressive cake justice. (I went back a couple of days later when it was sunny and took some better photos of a slice of it). (more…)
I was told when going to visit a friend that I “must bring cake”, so of course I jumped at the opportunity to do some baking! He LOVES chocolate so I made one of the most chocolaty things I could think of – quadruple chocolate cupcakes… Soft, dark chocolate cake surrounds a centre of gooey dark chocolate ganache and the cupcake is topped with swirled milk and white chocolate swiss meringue buttercream. They are insanely good! Seriously, among the best cupcakes I have ever eaten. Ever. (more…)
